Jennie Por of the ACE Center at Highland Springs named 2024 HCPS Teacher of the Year

Teacher of the Year surprise

Congratulations to Jennie Por, Henrico County Public Schools' 2024 Teacher of the Year! The early childhood education and preschool teacher was surprised Monday morning at the Springer Preschool Academy building in Highland Springs by HCPS leaders and members of her family.

"This is the most incredible honor. ... My heart is exploding right now. I'm just so pleased to be able to represent the greatest county ever."

Por was selected from five finalists — one from each of Henrico's magisterial districts — by a committee of administrators and educators using an interview and review process. Each finalist was also named their school's teacher of the year. Congratulations to the teachers honored at each of our schools for their exceptional work — you are the Heart of Henrico!

Survey will poll staff, high school students

Bulletin board with ''What do you think?''

Early next year, the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions will ask HCPS staff members and students in grades 9-12 about their school experiences. The anonymous survey will be given from Jan. 15 to Feb. 2, 2024. Survey results, available by the end of the school year, help shape educational practices and enhance safe and supportive learning environments.

Participation is voluntary and you can review the questions beforehand. Among a range of topics, the survey includes questions about bullying, mental health and suicide. If you prefer that your child not participate, notify your student's school by Jan. 12.

The survey is being conducted by HCPS, in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education. Thank you for your cooperation in this crucial study of Virginia's schools.

Is missing a few school days really a big deal?

Showing up together graphic

Missing a day of school here and there may not seem like much, but absences add up. If a student has four absences a month, they'll miss:

  • Forty days a year.
  • Sixty hours of important math instruction a year.
  • One hundred twenty hours of reading and writing instruction a year.
  • More than two years of school by the end of their senior year.
